Longfield normally runs a wide range of services, details of which can be found in our most recent Programme of Services.

In addition to our Hospice at Home service, our Day Services usually include counselling and bereavement support, complementary and day therapies, carers’ support, financial and benefits advice, as well as various support groups specific to diagnoses and particular needs.

Hospice at Home

Our Hospice at Home service is operating as normal, providing hands-on care and symptom management for people in the last few weeks of life to support them to die at home. The team works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Referrals to the Hospice at Home service must be made through a health-care professional such as your district nurse or GP.

Day Services

Currently due to Covid-19 restrictions we are providing our Day Services differently because the hospice building is closed to the public.

Instead of operating our Day Services in the building, we are making regular telephone contact with all of our patients, clients, carers and family members who have indicated that they would appreciate this support. We are happy to try and help with anything. Examples might include, discussing symptoms and ongoing treatments, chatting through any issues, signposting people to where and how they can get help with things like shopping and picking up medication, discussing symptoms and ongoing treatments, chatting through any issues, and sometimes just a general person to talk to. We know that sometimes people may just want to have a person to talk to and that’s fine.

Longfield is still accepting Day Services referrals and will happily add people to our waiting lists and also to our support call list if you are interested. Anyone can make a referral, or even refer themselves, to our Day Services.

Telephone Counselling Service

In response to changing needs during the Covid-19 crisis and building on from its well-established counselling and bereavement service, Longfield has launched a telephone counselling service. The service aims to be responsive to need and provide an opportunity for hospice clients who were previously accessing the face-to-face service but are unable to at present due to the social distancing rules, to still access a professional service. The new telephone counselling service is also accepting new referrals from those living with life-limiting illnesses or those who have been bereaved.

A hospice counsellor oversees the service which is being delivered by a small group of trained and experienced volunteers. It aims to provide a professional and confidential service to those living with a life-limiting illness or those who have been bereaved.

The feedback to date has been really positive, some clients were unsure about accessing counselling via the telephone, but after experiencing a session they have really welcomed talking through their worries or concerns and have benefited from re-starting or commencing their counselling.

For anyone wishing to access the service or self-refer-please call the hospice on 01453 886868  or email [email protected]  We will endeavour to return your call or email as quickly as possible.  The service is accessible to adults registered with a GP in Gloucestershire, or who live in Gloucestershire.

Moving forward

We are busy making plans for how best we can support people while social distancing restrictions apply, and until everyone is comfortable to access our services in their normal format at the hospice.

· We are  exploring the use of video applications to bring people together for a modified range of services. If you have any ideas that might be useful at this time please give us a call and share them with us. Please see below on how best to contact us.
